Peyton Manning’s Lessons In Career Strategy

Once again, the media gets this story wrong. Peyton left because he doesn’t have time to wait while they rebuild the Indianapolis franchise. He did not leave because Jim Irsay was unprepared or unwilling to pay him the bonus. Anyone who saw the press conference and have read the interviews is crazy to think otherwise. Peyton’s time to win as a quarterback is limited.

Technical or Financial.

Great CEOs Must be Either Technical or Financial

A CEO who does not understand, on a pretty macro level of course, what their employees are doing with available technology will be extremely ineffective. One doesn’t need a deep understanding, but I think one of the key elements not mentioned here is earning the respect of the technically-abled is crucial if they’re going to work to develop your product.

Mark Cuban’s 12 Rules for Startups

One of the best articles on startups I’ve read in awhile. It’s also one of the shortest.

The “you must have an exit strategy in business” mantra/requirement has always irked me. I’m not interested in leaving. That’s not to say that I don’t understand my fiduciary duties to my family, team members and customers.

I guess I have a problem with creating something simply to either destroy it or exit as soon as the payout can be best, without attachment. The right time may come for my exit in my current business or any future ones…but I’m not going to plan for it as I would plan to trade in a vehicle on a lease program.

I want to build something that will last.

Getting promoted too quickly.

bijan sabet: Getting promoted too quickly

Found this blog while looking at users who share the same tumblr theme as me, followed immediately….I once found myself as the employee getting promoted too quickly without being prepared to lead. While I was certainly running circles around the tasks that were given to me, I wasn’t ready to lead a team as a manager. I ended up ostracizing some of my team members and ultimately asked to be moved from the leadership role. I learned a lot…especially that being a skilled independent means nothing when it comes to leading a team. I still find myself micromanaging all the time. Our team calls me out on it constantly. Keeps me in check.
